First Aid Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Respond to an emergency situation

Identify and assess the emergency situation, ensure the safety of yourself, bystanders, and the casualty, determine the need for first aid, and contact emergency services for assistance.

2. Apply appropriate first aid procedures

Perform CPR following ARC guidelines and provide first aid based on established principles. Treat the casualty with respect, obtain their consent when possible, and use available resources and equipment to ensure their comfort. Operate all first aid tools as per manufacturer instructions, continuously monitor the casualty’s condition, and respond appropriately in line with first aid standards.

3. Communicate details of the incident

Provide accurate incident details to emergency services, report the event according to workplace or site procedures, complete all required documentation such as incident report forms, and maintain privacy and confidentiality in accordance with legal and organisational policies.

4. Review the incident

Acknowledge potential psychological effects on yourself and other responders, seeking support when needed, and take part in reviewing the first aid response when required.

CPR Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Respond to an emergency situation

In an emergency, first assess the situation and ensure safety for yourself, bystanders, and the casualty. Check the casualty’s condition to determine if CPR is needed, and promptly call emergency services for assistance.
