NSW has two main builder licence pathways via NSW Fair Trading. The Cert IV (CPC40120) qualifies you for a low-rise contractor licence covering Class 1 and 10 structures. The Diploma (CPC50220) opens the General Building (open) licence category, allowing medium-rise and commercial work. Both require a minimum of 2 years of site-based experience in the past 10 years.

Diploma Required Cert IV — Limited

Victoria's VBA requires registration as a Building Practitioner for domestic building work over $10,000 or any work requiring a building permit. The Diploma (CPC50220) is the prescribed qualification for Domestic Builder (Unlimited). The Cert IV (CPC40120) can support a Domestic Builder (Limited) registration via the equivalency assessment pathway, but requires at least 3 years of experience and VBA practical assessments.

Queensland has two primary builder licence categories through the QBCC. The Cert IV (CPC40120) meets the technical requirement for a Builder's Low Rise Licence (Class 1 and 10 structures). WA requires both a Building Practitioner (BP00) and Building Contractor (BC00) registration to contract for building work over $20,000. The Cert IV is a valuable first step — it provides credits toward the Diploma and opens site supervisor roles that build the required experience.

All classes require a mandatory written exam at 80% pass mark.

Those requiring gap training complete only the units they need, which keeps the timeline significantly shorter than a full course. Standard delivery without RPL typically runs 12–24 months part-time.
How much experience do I need before I can apply for a builder's licence?

Most states require between 2 and 4 years of documented, site-based building experience alongside your qualification. NSW requires a minimum of 2 years in the past 10 years. QLD requires 4 years of relevant building experience. VIC requires at least 3 years of paid experience in the past 7 years supervised by a registered practitioner. WA requires 5–7 years depending on your registration pathway. The ACT requires a minimum of 3 years under a licensed builder. Owner-builder experience generally does not count toward these requirements.
